ATHLETES:
Ronnie Lott and Harris Barton, two former San Francisco 49er football players, are raising $30 million from other pro athletes so they can cash in on the tech boom. Joe Dumars, the former Detroit Pistons star, has signed on as a special limited partner at Invescare Partners, a backer of medsite.com, where doctors can buy supplies and swap information.

FASHIONISTAS:
Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, has been one of the most aggressive European investors in E-commerce. Fashion doyenne Martha Stewart and a group of investors are spending $37.5 million to build Fragrance Counter into a health and beauty portal.

INSIDERS:
This year, KPMG Peat Marwick has made venture investments averaging $1 million in six companies, including software developer Active Software Inc. and Net solutions provider Silknet. Its typical deal: Backing companies whose technologies KPMG sells to its customers. Andersen Consulting also is using its insider role to invest in promising upstarts, such as Web-software maker ChannelPoint.
