-- Choose a tight, smooth weave. A loose weave is easier and faster to execute and doesn't have the same artistic value.

-- Look for evenness and symmetry of design. Eyeball the piece for straight edges, square corners, and centered patterns.

-- Pick a design that is pleasing to you. Some people like elaborate patterns with multiple colors, but a plain one can be worth just as much if the weave is intricate.

-- Figure the median price for a high-quality standard-size (3-foot by 5-foot) contemporary rug is $1,000 to $3,500.
