The Dismal Science Online From government statistics to pundits' opinions, the Internet is a wellspring of free resources for novice and expert economists alike. Dip your toe into the water at economics.about.com. It's run by Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics PhD candidate John S. Irons and is chock-full of data, forecasts, and articles. At WebEc (www.helsinki.fi/WebEc), meanwhile, you'll find a virtual reference library of hundreds of links to economics, finance, and central bank Web sites. Then there's Dismal Scientist (www.dismal.com). It so captivated me that I spent an hour browsing it. The user-friendly site has a terrific home page, with 15 timely economics stories. You can have economic statistics E-mailed to you as they're released, and the message boards host lively discussions--the weaknesses of global capitalism is one recent thread. A popular feature for folks in the market for a home ranks U.S. states or metropolitan areas by gross product, income, inflation, or real estate values. If you want to see what the pros are saying about the Federal Reserve or the world economy, go to Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's site (www.ms.com/gef.html) for the musings of U.S. economic strategist Stephen Roach and his colleagues in Europe and Asia. But for economics with attitude, check out Deutsche Bank Securities economist Edward Yardeni at www.yardeni.com. While his latest postings are reserved for Deutsche clients, there are plenty of recent statistics, charts, and archived articles for free. In the Y2K Reporter section, Yardeni dishes out his gloomy take on the millennium. Y2K is ''bound to disrupt the entire global economy,'' he writes, adding that there's a 70% chance of worldwide recession as severe as the devastating one of 1973-74. They don't call it the dismal science for nothing.
