Kang Je Gyu, Film director, South Korea (int'l edition)

KANG JE GYU'S THRILLER SWIRI has become the most watched movie in Korea. Kang, 36, used dazzling special effects and at the same time broke new ground on public discourse about North Korea. Kang dared to take a more empathetic view of its spies, seeing them as family men distraught over suffering at home. Kang's sympathies came from befriending North Korean students on travels in China. ''I found we were the same,'' he recalls. ''I'm disappointed when people portray North Koreans in black and white.'' Kang started out in still photography and was ''crazy'' about it until he decided he could go further in film. Millions of Korean filmgoers have proved him right.
