Nam Sang Koo, Independent Director, SK Telecom, South Korea (int'l edition) DISSENTING VOICES AREN'T USUALLY HEARD IN SOUTH KOREAN BOARDROOMS. That makes life especially hard for Nam Sang Koo, one of the country's few independent directors and one of the first appointed by newly empowered minority shareholders. Because of his decades-long campaign for corporate transparency while a professor of finance at Korea University, Nam last year was named, along with two other outsiders, to the board of SK Telecom, Korea's largest mobile-phone operator. Nam, a civil engineer with a PhD in finance from Wharton, doesn't particularly relish the role of being a thorn in the side of Korea Inc. ''There are easier jobs around, but I'll continue to do my best to protect shareholders' rights,'' says Nam, 52, who once dreamed of becoming a tycoon himself. With Nam at SK Telecom, you can be sure that the board of at least one Korean company will be protecting shareholders' interests. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |
