HP's Net Vision

E-OUTSOURCING
HP believes that within three years many companies will outsource their computer operations to telephone companies, Internet Service Providers, or computer makers. That's why HP is going to sell high-tech gear to these service providers or will handle the outsourcing jobs themselves. One approach: HP will cut deals forgoing up-front payment in exchange for a share of future revenues. HP has already done that with E-commerce portal Ariba.com and telecom upstart Qwest Communications.

E-SERVICES ON THE FLY
HP thinks it has found a way for cybersurfers and E-commerce companies to create online services at a moment's notice. Want directions to Denver airport that avoid traffic jams and are delivered to you via your car phone? A new HP software technology, e-speak, acts like a search engine to get the info off one or more sites.

INVEST IN THE NET
HP has been late to the Internet boom. To make up for lost time, the company is buying or investing in Internet companies, including OpenSkies, viaLink, Digital Broadcast Network, Dazel, and NorthernLight Technology. That way, it locks up a channel for its products, can tweak leading-edge technology to shine on HP gear, and may even cash in should the company's Net investments hit it big.
