The Tale of the Tape eBAY CORE BUSINESS: eBay runs the largest person-to-person auction Web site, connecting some 3.8 million buyers and sellers worldwide. It helps people buy and sell collectibles and antiques as well as many other goods normally sold through flea markets, antique stores, and classified advertisements. NUMBER OF ITEMS FOR SALE: 2 million GROSS MERCHANDISE SALES (1998): $746 million REVENUES TO COMPANY: $47.1 million WHAT'S NEXT: eBay plans to expand into local markets for large items such as cars and furniture while stepping up expansion internationally. It's also mulling fixed-price auctions and dealer storefronts to offer a wider range of products and pricing choices. MARKET CAPITALIZATION: $25 billion AMAZON.COM CORE BUSINESS: Amazon.com's mission is to help people find almost anything they want to buy online. The largest and broadest online consumer retailer, Amazon is also moving to become a leading auctioneer and to act as a marketplace for hundreds of other merchants.
