Winning control of Scania would justify its recent decision to sell its auto unit to Ford for $6.5 billion and concentrate on heavy trucks. If it fails, it could become a takeover target itself.

For their holding company, Investor, Scania is a crown jewel. Giving in to a raider could open up a slew of hostile raids on other companies in their empire.

OTHER TRUCKMAKERS
From DaimlerChrysler to Fiat's Iveco, whoever takes over Scania's 15% market share would take a big step toward industry dominance.
