What Is a 'Life Sciences' Company?


How did a group of lumbering chemical and agriculture giants suddenly become ''life-sciences'' companies? Monsanto and Novartis both claim to have invented the moniker, coined in 1996. ''Plant sciences'' no longer seemed broad enough to describe the revolution in plant genetics. Then, too, ''life sciences'' might just sound sexier to investors.
