Pocket-Size Peril

THE PARTNERS
Mobile phone powers Nokia, Ericsson, and Motorola have teamed up with British handheld-computer maker Psion to create the London-based venture.

THE PRODUCTS
They will unveil five types of wireless gadgets next year that will be powered by their own common software platform, which will compete with similar devices using Microsoft's Windows CE.

THE STRATEGY
Symbian is betting that customers will gravitate to its mobile products first, since they will be made by partners who already control 70% of the cell-phone market.
