WILLIAM SCHROEDER - CEO, Diamond Multimedia Systems

Schroeder, who has run modem and graphics card maker Diamond Multimedia Systems, since 1995, has been more than happy to just ride the PC wave. Not anymore, thanks to Diamond's three-month-old Rio, a 2.4-ounce Walkman-style gizmo that plays music downloaded from the Net. The Rio is expected to bring in 20% of Diamond's revenues this quarter--roughly $30 million--and unit sales could pass 750,000 this year. With that kind of evidence, Schroeder is shifting Diamond's investments away from PC products and toward other information appliances. Says Schroeder, 54: ''See, you can teach an old dog new tricks.''
