Seeing the Net As a Mixed Blessing CEOs ARE GAZING INTO THEIR CRYSTAL BALLS TO DETERMINE THE ROLE E-COMMERCE WILL PLAY IN THEIR FUTURES. It appears to be anything but cloudy. A survey of 802 CEOs released on Jan. 28 by PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that half believe nontraditional rivals--such as online companies--will pose a threat. Still, the survey showed the execs also see the Net as an opportunity: 40% expect E-commerce to account for more than 10% of their revenue within five years. For that to happen, more CEOs may need to get wired. Only 25% are regular Net users, and while nearly a third rate their level of sophistication of Internet use as good or excellent, 25% say their online skills are poor. But ''greater exposure to the Web is likely to make them even more bullish,'' says Ed Berryman, a PricewaterhouseCoopers director, consulting his crystal ball.
