Web Searches: Going the Extra Mile

Following my Feb. 8 column on better Web searching, I heard from several readers who offered additional recommendations. Most are what are known as meta-search tools: sites that harness several conventional search engines and then try to make a coherent presentation of what can be overwhelming results. If you really want to do an exhaustive search, Dogpile (www.dogpile.com) will turn 14 search engines loose on your query. It offers additional specialized searches of Net discussion groups, news wires, business news, and software archives. ProFusion (www.profusion.com) is less relentless, but does better at ranking the results for accuracy. SavvySearch (www.sav-vysearch.com) is good at specialty searches, for instance, letting you limit your sources to online encyclopedias. Some Macintosh owners took me to task for not mentioning Sherlock, a feature of the new MacOS 8.5. Sherlock is not a search engine as such but a nifty tool that allows a seamless search of both the content of hard drives and of the Internet. A wide variety of software ''plug-ins'' lets you link your desktop directly to an assortment of data sources, from traditional search tools like Yahoo! to the Amazon.com book catalog.
