India's Bad Numbers

BUDGET DEFICIT
The federal government's deficit is 6% of GDP. The profligate states are running deficits equal to 4% of GDP.

GROWTH
The government wants 6.5%, but it will probably be 4% in 1999.

DEBT
Servicing interest on the national debt costs $20 billion a year.

INFLATION
It's edging past 16%.
