A Raider's Who's Who

FRANCOIS PINAULT, 63
France's premier dealmaker. Last year, his Artemis Holdings acquired auction house Christie's for $1.2 billion, then spent $570 million to buy 12.6% share of Groupe Bouygues from fellow French raider Vincent Bollore. A billionaire, he is now focusing on media and phone properties.

VINCENT BOLLORE, 47
Targets underperforming, family-controlled businesses. Pocketing $200 million by selling his Bouygues stake to Pinault, he bought 10.5% of Pathe, France's largest film and video distribution company. Since the purchase on Dec. 15, he has added to his stake, while the stock price has risen 30%.

LUIGI GIRIBALDI, 74
Monte Carlo-based investor has spent $163 million building up a 15% stake in a bid to control Italian industrial group Snia. Last year, he pocketed $175 million after selling stakes in companies controlled by Carlo De Benedetti

MARTIN EBNER, 53
In his drive to boost shareholder value, this Swiss raider engineered the $29 billion merger between Union Bank of Switzerland and Swiss Bank Corp. and the shotgun marriage of Winterthur Insurance and Credit Suisse. Now, he is planning to push industrial and financial consolidation elsewhere in Europe.

KARL EHLERDING, 60 E
The Hamburg-based financier wrested control of Bonn-based real estate company IVG Holding in mid-January.
