PC ACCESSORIES: PORT PROSPECTS

The Windows 98 and the Universal Serial Bus connectors on most newer PCs can make hooking up accessories a snap. But there's still a serious shortage of USB printers, cameras, and other devices on the market. One solution is the AccelePort USB from Digi International (800 344-4273 or www.dgii.com). The $199 box turns one USB port into two serial ports and one parallel port and brings the connectors around to the front of the PC for easy access. Modems, digital cameras, and palmtop sync cradles can be used with the serial ports. The parallel port only works with printers, but it can free the built-in parallel port on your computer for use with another device, such as a scanner.
