UNDERGROUND PAPERS' NEW ROUTE: THE WEB
THE UNDERGROUND IS HEADED FOR CYBERSPACE. The founders of New City, a Chicago-based alternative weekly newspaper, have formed NewCity Net, a Web portal that combines content from nearly 40 alternative publications--from the San Francisco Bay Guardian to the Philadelphia City Paper--forming a national network of ''whip-smart, in-your-face cultural commentary,'' according to the Web site.
Fans of the alternative press can go to www.new citynet.com to see a preview of the portal, which is set for mid-December launch. The site will also feature arts-and-entertainment reviews and edgy comic strips. Next year, it will offer E-mail, classified advertising, and a search engine. Most of the services will be free to users, except the classified ads.
New City has secured advertising from Netscape Communications, U S West, and BellSouth. Revenue--a projected $6 million in 1999--will come from additional advertising, including classifieds and corporate partnerships. Looks like the hippies of yesteryear have found a new home in high tech. Groovy.
