WHAT GETS LOST IN THE GENDER GAP

WOMEN STILL MAKE 74 CENTS for every dollar a man makes--but you know that. What's new is a feature on the AFL-CIO Web site enabling Everywoman to calculate the actual sum she'll lose during her lifetime--and what that means in lost dinners out and vacations in Jamaica.

To do the math, log on to www.aflcio.org. The union's lively new Equal Pay section has brought the site half a million hits since its September launch. ''This is a sleeper issue, and we're trying to wake it up,'' says Karen Nussbaum of the AFL-CIO's Working Woman Dept.

No wonder: That 26 cents adds up. To find out how much, a visitor enters her salary, age, and education, then links to a site computer. Sample: A 44-year-old with a year of college earning $40,000 will lose $1.06 million. That's 254 years of child care, 1.8 million servings of macaroni and cheese, or 806 weeks in Jamaica.

The feature evolved after a union survey of 50,000 working women revealed equal pay as their top concern. The ''gender gap'' results because ''women's'' jobs typically pay less than even equivalent ''men's'' jobs. Male stock clerks earn $470 a week to female office clerks' $361. So, guess who eats the most macaroni?
