The Issues in Taiwan's Electoral Campaign

THE SEATS
The election is not for President but will decide key contests for the legislature and for local government--especially Taipei.

THE PARTIES
The ruling Kuomintang is struggling to retain seats, while the opposition DPP is likely to surge.

THE BIG PICTURE
If the DPP's Chen Shui-bian wins Taipei, that will be a springboard to the President's office.

THE CHINA QUESTION
A Taiwan ruled by the DPP will cease efforts to reunify with China, possibly provoking Beijing's wrath.

THE U.S. QUESTION
If the DPP gets aggressive about independence, the U.S., which supports China's position, will be in a tough spot diplomatically.

THE KMT'S RULE
A DPP victory will bring the island closer than ever to the end of the KMT's 50-year rule.
