REX GETS SMARTERREX, THE NIFTY CREDIT-CARD size organizer from Franklin Electronic Publishers (FEP) (609 386-2500), has learned some new tricks. The new $229 Rex Pro still can collect addresses and calendar information from a Windows PC. But while the original Rex-3 could only display the information, the new model lets you enter data by tapping a tiny on-screen keyboard. The procedure is tedious, and you won't want to enter much. But it's handy for last-minute schedule changes or jotting down names. Probably more useful is Rex's enhanced ability to exchange information with PC-based contact managers. TrueSync Plus from Starfish Software allows direct synchronization with many programs, including Microsoft Outlook, Symantec ACT!, and Lotus Organizer. Starfish will expand TrueSync to allow Internet-based synchronization of devices including handheld computers and data-capable cell phones. The Rex Pro holds about 6,000 contact records and includes the Rex Desktop (a version of Starfish's Sidekick information manager) and a cradle to synchronize, or swap, information with your computer. The original Rex-3 will remain on the market, with prices starting at $99.
