WAS AL DUNLAP A ONE-TRICK CEO?

In ''At least Chainsaw Al knew how to hire a board'' (News: Analysis & Commentary, June 29), John Byrne recognizes the importance of an independent board of directors to protect shareholder interests in all corporate situations. The case of Sunbeam Corp. illustrates another key point: namely, the distinction between a task-oriented turnaround manager, who makes difficult decisions and stabilizes a money-losing business, and a people-oriented growth manager, who defines a vision and builds a team to implement the plan. All too often, turnaround managers believe (incorrectly) that they can become the growth manager.
