The cards contain computer chips that store and manipulate data. You can use one as a cash card, to pay for phone calls, or to hold medical records. Multi-application versions are in use on campuses including the University of Michigan. American Express, Hilton Hotels, and IBM are in another pilot.

...AND ELECTRONIC BILLING
Intuit, Microsoft, CheckFree, and others are behind the push to let you view and pay bills at your bank or broker's Web site. AT&T recently signed on, joining Southern California Edison and other utilities.
