GOING ONLINE IN A SINGLE TOUCHWHEN COMPAQ COMPUTER CORP. takes the wraps off its fall line of home PCs on June 9, what will stand out are the glitzy features that allow users to get to the Internet easily and quickly. Among them is a keyboard that offers one-touch access to a Compaq Web page, electronic-commerce Web sites, E-mail, and search engines (such as the AltaVista site run by Digital Equipment Corp., which Compaq is acquiring). The company also will offer a $100 rebate for customers who sign up for GTE Corp.'s Internet services, say industry sources. Unlike Gateway 2000 Inc. and Packard Bell NEC Inc., which will bundle Netscape Communications Corp.'s browser software, Compaq's new desktop line will use Microsoft Corp. software exclusively. All the machines will have Microsoft Works, Encarta, Money, Bookshelf, and Internet Explorer 4.0. The PCs sold before June 25 will have Windows 95, but they will come with a coupon for Windows 98. Prices will range from an $899 Presario desktop without monitor to $2,599 for top-of-the-line models.
