WASHINGTON HAS A NUCLEAR DOUBLE STANDARD''What India needs is wealth, not bombs'' (Commentary, May 25) suggested that while it is all right for the Chinese to stockpile nuclear weapons (because the U.S. has a sizable business relationship with them), it is not all right for India to do so (since a comparable trade agreement is lacking). If such double standards are allowed to pass as realpolitik and are used to craft our foreign policies, then our claim to being a just and fair nation will be unconvincing, and we will lose moral authority. Considering that two of our strongest allies, Britain and France, have refused to impose sanctions against India at the Group of Eight Summit, maybe we should take a serious look into India's security concerns. Otherwise, the U.S. may be perceived as comfortable with communist dictators but not with the world's largest democracy.
