GOOD NEIGHBORS DON'T NEED GOOD FENCES

The current border-crossing rules between the U.S. and Canada are silly and outdated (''Canadians feel a frost at the border,'' News: Analysis & Commentary, May 4). To maintain the friendly relations the two countries have enjoyed, let's open up the border for free crossing without any customs inspections. Crossing between the U.S. and Canada should be painless, like borders in Europe. With the forthcoming European Monetary Union, a strong, combined U.S.-Canada economic power becomes even more important.
