POWER AT A GOOD PRICETHE LATEST DESKTOP PCs aren't for everyone. With superfast Pentium II processors and display adapters, they pack more power than most buyers want or need. But if you do multimedia production or enjoy arcade games, these machines offer a lot of performance at affordable prices. Take Dell Computer's Dimension XPS ''R'' series. An R350 with a 350-Mhz processor, 64 MB of memory, and 17-in. (15.9-in. viewable) monitor is just $2,329. The top-of-the-line R400, at $3,749, has about everything you could want. The 400-Mhz processor draws on 128 MB of RAM, a 16.8-GB hard drive, and built-in Zip drive. You can use the 19-in. (17.9-in. viewable) monitor to watch movies played on the digital-videodisk drive, while the sound card and speakers do a reasonable job of simulating six-speaker Dolby Surround Sound. These new models have driven down the prices of simpler machines. A Dimension XPS D233 with a 233-Mhz Pentium II and 17-in. monitor is now just $1,799. RELATED ITEMS
