GETTING JUST THE HOT NEWS

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET BREAKING NEWS, sports scores, and market data on your laptop or handheld PC but don't need full wireless Internet access, the Mobile Internet Antenna from AirMedia (800 247-6334 or 714 737-5410) may be for you. And unlike most wireless services, AirMedia Live, which is based on paging technology, is cheap and ubiquitous. Service starts at $5.95 a month, and coverage is available almost everywhere in the U.S.

The Mobile Internet Antenna itself is a 4 1/2 oz., $129 unit that connects to the serial port of a Windows 95 or NT laptop or a Windows CE handheld. The battery-powered device includes 1 megabyte of memory, so it can collect information even while your computer is turned off.

The basic package includes news from CNN, sports from CBS Sportsline, stock data from Quote.com, and forecasts from the Weather Channel. For an additional $4 a month, AirMedia will alert you to up to 100 incoming E-mail messages a month. To reply to messages, however, you'll need to connect to your mail service over a wireless or conventional modem.
