THIS PRINTER IS A SPRINTER

XEROX, LONG A LEADER IN HIGH-VOLUME COMPUTER PRINTING SYSTEMS, is plunging into the desktop printing market. And its first retail product, the DocuPrint P12, looks like a winner.

This $700 printer uses Adobe's PrintGear acceleration technology to turn out a brisk 12 pages per minute from any Windows computer. That's 50% faster than the $800 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 6P, though the HP is quieter and more compact.

A 250-sheet paper tray should keep the Xerox going for a while between reloadings, and options include a 500-sheet tray and an envelope feeder. A $120 toner cartridge should print around 6,000 pages for a cost of about 2 cents per typical black and white page.

A DocuPrint attached to one computer can be shared among other Windows computers. An optional $399 Ethernet card allows it to be attached directly to a network for better performance and more flexibility in choosing locations for the printer.
