SANFORD I. WEILLSANFORD I. WEILL'S masterful $9 billion acquisition of Salomon was the latest in a decade-long empire-building campaign. With equity of $20.2 billion now under Travelers Group, the 64-year-old Weill has secured his position as one of the most powerful figures on Wall Street. Weill's dealmaking paid off big-time, as Travelers stock shot up about 75% in '97. But he's hardly finished: In '98, he'll focus on transforming Salomon Smith Barney into an investment banking powerhouse even as he remains on the prowl for further buys in financial services.
