Disarray on Net Ratings

AMERICA ONLINE
Hopes voluntary industry ratings will stave off attempts at government censorship of the Internet. The industry wants to head off a revival of anything like the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which was overturned by the Supreme Court.

TIME INC. NEW MEDIA
While Time Warner is open to ratings, its New Media unit and other online news providers oppose ratings of news sites

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
The ACLU and other civil-liberties groups, which had joined in the fight against the CDA, now oppose Internet content ratings for fear that they will chill free cyberspeech.

WHITE HOUSE
The President continues to support ratings as one of many alternatives to more restrictive legislation.
