HELP DESK

Q: Reader Daniel L. Mosher of San Francisco complains that since installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 on his Compaq LTE 5300, the startup of other programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel, has slowed--drastically. What can be done?

A: Most users who have installed IE 4.0 have found it to be relatively trouble-free, but some performance and compatibility problems have emerged. The most serious involve a number of Compaq Presario models (not including Mosher's laptop), which cannot run the current version of IE 4.0. Microsoft and Compaq Computer are collaborating on a fix.

Microsoft programmers, meanwhile, are looking into other performance problems that have cropped up, including slow response to clicking the start button and the slow program loading.

If you are having problems, for updates check out www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40.

Meanwhile, if you have downloaded IE 4.0 for free and are unhappy, it's easy to get rid of. Open the Control Panel and pick Add/Remove Programs. Click on Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 from the program list, then click Add/Remove.
