JAMES DIMON

President & COO, Travelers Group

James Dion He has risen so fast at such a young age that at 41, James Dimon has few peers. Dimon is president of Travelers Group Inc., the $21 billion insurance and brokerage conglomerate. He's also CEO of Smith Barney Inc. That title soon will become co-chief executive of Salomon Smith Barney, when Travelers consummates its $9 billion purchase of Salomon Brothers Inc. Dimon will share the CEO job with Deryck Maughan.

Dimon is considered a top consolidator of financial-services companies. He tries to choose the best people for key jobs based on performance, not ego and politics. This requires ''cajoling, begging, and compromising.'' His other rule is to be fair and act quickly. Says Dimon: ''Everybody has to feel like management is acting justly.''
