WHAT DO WOMEN WANT ONLINE?AN INTERNET RESEARCH company in New York says it knows what makes women ''click.'' NetSmart Inc. claims that there are now 5 million women surfing the Net--nearly double the number two years ago. And in its latest 450-page report, the company says the reason women are flocking to the Web is vastly different from what draws men. Rather than Web-surfing merely for entertainment or as a means of getting more information, 91% of the women surveyed said they expect the Net to be ''the new time-saving household appliance.'' That's because women feel cyberspace helps them better juggle career, family, and household duties. For what NetSmart calls ''Dr. Mom'' types who put their children before everything else, 83% use the Net to help with homework. Among ''Ms. Biz'' types who place a big emphasis on their career, 71% use the Net for shopping and banking online. Indeed, 54% of the women polled have bought at least one item online, even though 41% of them are still concerned about security.
