Strategies for Filling the Gaps
BROKERS Ask for cost-basis data at the firm where you made the investment. Firms usually archive even dormant account records. COMPANIES The shareholder relations department can be of help, but the level of assistance will vary by company and how far back your request goes. MUTUAL FUNDS Call the shareholder service number. The last two years' records are usually free, but be prepared to pay after that. TAX RETURNS If you've reinvested dividends and distributions, you can fill in missing years' cost data by looking at how much income from those investments you've reported on past returns. REFERENCES Check the business section of the public library for Commerce Clearing House's Capital Changes Reporter, or S&P's Corporation Records, Dividend Record, and Daily Stock Price Record.
