CAN THIS DISPLAY CUT DOWN ON CLUTTER?FOR SOME WALL STREET traders and brokers, there's just never enough desktop space. That's because their work areas often are cluttered with multiple computer monitors, each showing different pieces of information on stocks and market activity. To cut down on the space and energy required by huge displays, PixelVision Technology Inc. in Acton, Mass., has an elegant solution. Its SmartGlas system is a set of four flat-panel color displays--thin, like those found on high-end laptops--that can turn the display area into the equivalent of a 30-inch monitor. The secret is the SmartGlas hub, a small box that connects the 15-inch liquid crystal display units to the display output of a PC or Unix workstation to make the foursome act as one monitor. Companion software allows owners to tell the hub how the flat displays should be used--vertically, horizontally (photo), or in a 2-foot-by-2-foot square. To move a window of information from one LCD panel to another, users merely click on their mouse to drag it across to the appropriate panel. While the setups start at $4,000, the displays emit no radiation and use a mere 25 watts of power.
