'Amerco' RevisitedAmerco in The Time Bind is, in fact, Corning. Yet the company has changed since Arlie Russell Hochschild's study:
Long hours are de rigueur; managers equate 60-hour workweeks with performance and dedication. Many line managers, worried about disrupting operations, resist progressive work-life policies. Turnover among women employees is far higher than among men; the ''glass ceiling'' is clearly visible.
An intense environment remains the rule, but emphasis is shifting to productivity from sheer hours. Training and relentless communication seem to have softened opposition--but not in all operating units. The attrition rate for women, at 8%, has declined, but still is nearly three times that of white males.
