'Amerco' Revisited

Amerco in The Time Bind is, in fact, Corning. Yet the company has changed since Arlie Russell Hochschild's study:

Long hours are de rigueur; managers equate 60-hour workweeks with performance and dedication.

Many line managers, worried about disrupting operations, resist progressive work-life policies.

Turnover among women employees is far higher than among men; the ''glass ceiling'' is clearly visible.


CORNING, 1997

An intense environment remains the rule, but emphasis is shifting to productivity from sheer hours.

Training and relentless communication seem to have softened opposition--but not in all operating units.

The attrition rate for women, at 8%, has declined, but still is nearly three times that of white males.
