WEB DESTINATIONS

Summer vacation season is upon us, and the World Wide Web can provide tons of useful information to travelers. Want to know just where your hotel is in Salt Lake City? Yahoo! provides a free online mapping service that can pinpoint it--and give you driving directions from I-15. Detailed maps are available for all U.S. cities.

It's easy enough for travelers to get detailed weather information for where they are now, but what about their destinations? The Weather Channel's Web site offers current weather conditions and forecasts for dozens of U.S. and foreign locations. Other features include weather maps and satellite and radar shots. An especially nice touch is a weather map that shows major U.S. airports. Click on the airport of interest, and you get a current estimate of air traffic delays.

Every tourism office in the world, it seems, has a Web page offering information on local attractions. But where do you find out about the stuff that may not make the AAA or the Chamber of Commerce lists? This site, an outgrowth of Simon & Schuster's New Roadside America guidebook, keeps you up to date on such tourism news as the opening of President Clinton's boyhood home in Hope, Ark., as well as the closing of Perry's Nut House in Maine. If you have an eye for the weird, make sure to check out the Vortex page, which includes such gems as significant sites in the life of Alferd Packer, America's most notorious cannibal.
