A SPEEDY SPLASH OF COLOR

WANT TO PUT COLOR PHOTOS onto your Web site? A new wave of compact scanners makes it easier--and cheaper--than ever. Hewlett-Packard Co. just announced the $249 ScanJet 5s, which converts color and black-and-white documents into digital form. And on May 5, Visioneer Inc. will unveil its first color scanner, the $299 PaperPort Strobe.

Visioneer's device--the size of a rolling pin--comes with software to adjust the brightness, contrast, and color of images, as well as convert scanned documents to text. But its chief advantage over rivals is speed: The Strobe is twice as fast as previous sheet-fed scanners, taking seven seconds to scan a 4-in.-by-6-in. color photo at 100 dots per inch (DPI). The secret is its faster motors and new technology from Visioneer that replaces the usual mirrors and lenses inside a scanner. Instead, a line of solid-state chips ''read'' the document. HP's much larger unit does pretty well, too: It takes just 12 seconds to scan a color photo at 150 DPI. Both devices also can scan at higher resolutions such as 300 DPI. According to InfoTrends Research Group in Kansas City, Mo., more than 1 million compact sheet-fed scanners will be sold this year by HP, Visioneer, Logitech International, and other makers.
