SHIVA'S BAD KARMA Its founders named Shiva for the Hindu god of destruction and rebirth. They could use a bit of the latter. On Mar. 31, Shiva warned that for the second quarter in a row it will post a ''substantial operating loss.'' It blames falling prices for remote access gear and a write-down of outdated modems. Shiva shares fell 25% on the news--despite reports that Shiva's partner, Nortel, will pay royalties for Shiva technology. Some investors fear the company may not remain independent.
