PHILLIPS PETROLEUM AND SUN: THE CRUDE EDGEPerformance in the fuel industry ranges from Phillips Petroleum, at No.23, to Sun, at No.423. What's the difference? Phillips, which drills, refines, and then sells the finished products, got a boost from a 25% jump in crude prices last year. Meanwhile, Sun, which owns the Sunoco brand, is largely a refiner, where margins are thin. Scattered operations make it tough to leverage its size or achieve market share. To succeed in this business requires control, focus, and enough diversity to withstand bad times.
