MORE SOPHISTICATION: The downsizing of Corporate America has created a new generation of franchisees: Savvy former executives who want to be their own bosses. They're less willing to put up with franchisers' strong-arm tactics.
LITIGATION VICTORIES: Franchisees have won a string of major court cases, gaining more geographic protection against competitors from the same chain and greater power to challenge onerous contracts.
ORGANIZATION: Franchisees are joining national groups such as the American Franchisee Assn. in greater numbers, as well as starting more intra-chain groups.
