INVESTMENT FIGURES OF THE WEEK

COMMENTARY
An encouraging start for 1997. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 102
points, to 6544, on Jan. 3 and closed at a record 6601 on Jan. 7. Computer
stocks led the rally. Meanwhile, the dollar hit a 45-month high against the
yen, as investors wagered that the U.S. markets would continue to lure
investors. But the market pulled back to 6549 on Jan. 8. The drop was sparked
by a decline in bond prices, as traders fretted over the prospect of higher
interest rates. Disappointing profit numbers also pummeled the market.
