NOW, WIDE SCREENSBig-screen laptops, with 12.1-inch displays now common on high-end units and 13-inchers on the way, are impressive. But don't try to use one in the confines of an airplane coach section, where the back of the seat ahead blocks you from opening that tall screen. The WideNote from Sharp Electronics (800 237-4277) offers an interesting alternative, with a display that's 9 3/4 inches wide but just 5 3/4 inches high. The superwide display can display two word-processor or Web pages side by side. The WideNote is powered by a 133 MHz Pentium and comes with 16 megabytes of RAM standard, a 1.1 gigabyte hard drive, and an external floppy. The unit weighs in at 4.6 pounds and costs $2,999 for a passive-matrix display and $3,499 for an active-matrix version.
