WELL-CHOSEN WORDS

The new version of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary on CD-ROM from Random House seems like a great idea. The $40 Windows program offers a choice between a full multimedia dictionary on CD-ROM or just 316,000 definitions (sans pictures and spoken pronunciations) in 30 megabytes of hard-disk space. The dictionary is excellent, but the software integrates smoothly only with Microsoft Word 6.0 and Word Perfect 6.1, which predate Windows 95. Making the dictionary available as a menu choice under Word 7.0 requires a complicated installation. Using it with other programs requires pressing ``hot key'' combinations.
