GE Computes The Future

Led by Gary Reiner, its new chief information officer, GE is:

   - Encouraging suppliers and customers to do business with it over the 
Internet

   - Developing systems to remotely diagnose problems in everything from jet 
engines to household appliances

   - Creating commercial information services based on systems that have been 
used internally

   - Reengineering its purchasing systems to gain companywide buying power

   - Cleaning up key databases to reduce inaccuracies and redundancies
