WHAT SURFERS WANT: NOW IT CAN BE TOLDWHAT DRIVES PEOPLE TO LOG online and onto the World Wide Web? A survey conducted by New York City-based NetSmart found some interesting data that should warm the hearts of Net advertisers. What Makes People Click? is a 150-page report tabulating the opinions of 500 adults who use the Internet and online services for more than one hour per week, not counting time spent on E-mail. Of those surveyed, 97% said becoming an educated consumer is a primary goal. Some 81% use the Net to research products and services, with 46% buying the goods at retail and 37% online. ``Fun'' (57%) was another key motivation to log on, but not necessarily for ``games'' (22%). Of course, surfing the Net does have its pluses and minuses. Some 64% of respondents said they watch less TV, but 30% said they're sleeping less. EDITED BY PAUL M. ENG
