A SHAPELY HPHewlett-Packard is taking the plunge into the under-$500 laser printer market with its new LaserJet 5L. A radical departure from the boxy look of all previous LaserJets, the 5L feeds paper from a vertical bin instead of a tray and prints four pages per minute. A separate slot allows you to feed in envelopes without removing the paper. Using a vertical bin allowed for a less expensive design featuring simpler paper handling and elimination of a fan and other components. Although the 5L increases print quality from 300 to 600 dots per inch, it's expected to retail for around $480, about $50 less than the LaserJet 4L it replaces. BY STEPHEN H. WILDSTROM
